My heartiest congratulations to the Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS) on the happy occasion of your 50th anniversary.
I think it would be fair to say that SOS journey over the past five decades has been one of continuing adaptation to changing needs and circumstances, while remaining focussed on its mission of serving the interest of members and working closely with partners.
As the makeup of the sea-going workforce changed over the years and decades with fewer Singaporeans taking up sailing roles, SOS has had to asked itself fundamental questions about how to sustain its membership. At the same time, what must it do to look after the interests of its members who are looking not only for sailing jobs but also onshore roles? For the union as a whole, what must it do to ensure its financial viability and continued relevance to its sectoral partners? This led SOS to evolve its structures and concepts of operation, and it remained a source of strength and help that its members young and older rely on with confidence.
2020 has been a disruptive year for everyone in the world. The shipping industry was certain also impacted, and the lives and livelihoods of seamen were adversely affected too. SOS rose to the occasion and leveraged on its various capabilities built up over the years to play a useful role in making the manning and changing out of crew of ships that much smoother and safer. SOS continues to showcase its innovative spirit and adaptability amid wrenching and even sudden changes in the operating environment. Its survival instincts and eye for turning threat into opportunity remain strong.
I wish the union every success in the years ahead, as you continue to navigate toward a better future!
